Chappo's Corner 05/03/10

THERE are no excuses for Tuesday's defeat at Concord. It was a bad day all round. We got what we deserved on the night. It's no good pointing your fingers and making excuses. Nothing went right for us and we were shocking and we weren't at the races.

Everything that they did went right for them. The third goal summed it up when the free-kick hit the wall and went in the other direction Andy Reynolds was going. On our side of things we hit a shot in the second and it deflected and went wide. That's just the way football goes sometimes and it's disappointing. It's no good just saying 'never mind', we all need to look at ourselves because it was unacceptable. We're better than that, but one result doesn't make you a poor side.

What we need to do is take it on the chin, accept it, because we got what we deserved on the night - a good hiding. Hopefully that will kick us up the backside because that was embarrassing for all of us. But we've got move forward. It's no good feeling sorry for ourselves and we've got to pick ourselves up. All we lost was three points. That's what was at stake and we're still in a good position and there's still a lot of football to be played.

What we need to as individuals is look at ourselves and see if we're doing our jobs. We need to get back to basics. We know we've got quality individually and as a unit but we've got to start doing the basics again, first and foremost. And that's hard work, shape, chat, organisation, tempo and just getting back to doing the simple things. We need to make sure we're hard to break down and get back to what we were doing earlier in the season and that's not conceding goals.

If we do that, as a unit, our quality will hurt a lot of sides. That's the message we'll be giving the boys. It was a kick up the backside and sometimes in football you can get a wake-up call and it can do you the world of good. Things happen that can inspire you to out another run together. Plenty of things happened on Tuesday that we can keep in the locker and drive us on to the end of the season. We've got 15 games left and a lot of points still to play for.

We'll accept that and take it on the chin. We're not happy, but you can't change what's happened. We're very positive about the last games of the season and it's going to be tough. If we do the basics we'll get back to being a really difficult side to beat. Great Wakering Rovers away tomorrow is another tough game. They and others will have seen the result on Tuesday and will all be thinking 'Lowestoft are slipping up'.

We're already hearing it. People turn on a pinhead sometimes. One minute you going to walk away with the next minute you get a bad result, but talk is cheap. But we've got to concentrate on ourselves. When you get a bad result, you look for a reaction in the next game and we're looking for a big reaction, not just in the next game but the next 15 games.

We've got a strong squad, and if players aren't going to do what you want on the park then they'll be looking over their shoulders because there are people waiting to take the shirt off their backs. But we haven't stopped believing in the squad. You don't become bad players overnight and we haven't stopped believing in our squad. We know they're a great bunch of lads and we know they've got great quality and Tuesday isn't going to change that at all.

It's a big test of character now.
